Getting Ready For Your Big Day

Are you or someone you know getting married? How exciting! While you begin making all the arrangements, have you thought about your first dance? It’s definitely worth planning ahead, so you’ll kick off the reception with a memorable first dance that will amaze all of your guests!

At DanceFX Studios, we have choreographed a multitude of first dances. We suggest preparing for your first dance way ahead of time, so when the big day comes, the two of you will move effortlessly on the dance floor for the first dance and throughout the reception. To get you started, we recommend that you set up a wedding consultation, in order to provide you with a dance that matches your preferences and personalities. This one-hour appointment is only $20 and will include a mini dance lesson, as well as, the opportunity for us to obtain as much pertinent information as necessary to enable us to customize your exceptional first dance!

Being prepared for your wedding dance consultation will really help the instructor to understand your vision for your special day and will save you both time and money. You may be wondering- how in the heck are we supposed to get ready for our consultation? Well, we’re going to help you out with some useful tips.

Let’s start with the music, after all, you can’t have a first dance without music! At Dance FX Studios, we advise you to have at least 3 songs to work with or at least an idea of the style of music you prefer. You and your fiance will need to get some ideas together before you come in for the wedding consultation.

Do you both like a classic wedding dance song, like something from Etta James or Harry Connick, Jr? Great, then the foxtrot is just right for this type of music. Maybe you’re thinking about something hot and spicy, such as salsa or bachatta. Love Big Band music? Then, swing dancing would be perfect for you! Here in Arizona, Country music is very popular, so learning the two-step might be a good choice for you and your soon-to-be spouse. Now, if you want something sensuous and passionate, then you should definitely try the Argentine tango. Can you imagine how blown away your loved ones will be seeing you doing this hot-blooded dance?

If you’re just not sure what you what you want, bring 3 of your favorite songs so that your wedding consultant has an idea of what both of you like and can offer some suggestions based on your preferences.  Finding you just can’t agree on any song choices? No worries, both of you can bring in your own top 3 selections and we can get creative coming up with something that will make both of you happy.

Now, believe it or not, the bride and groom’s clothes are as important as the dance. For the grooms, you only need to be concerned with your shoes and jacket. To allow you to effortlessly move across the dance floor, your best bet is to wear leather bottomed shoes. This way, you don’t have to worry that your smooth moves won’t be hampered by shoes that are not moving as easily across the floor as you. After all, you don’t want all your efforts learning to dance to be sabotaged by shoes! As for your jacket, it’s best if you don’t wear it during the first dance, as it may inhibit your moves. Now, if you’d like you can actually make this part of the dance, where either you dramactically take it off and toss it into the crowd or have your bride seductively remove it. What an impressive way to start off your first dance!

For the brides, shoes are also important. You don’t want heels that are so high that you topple over when your new husband twirls you around. And forget about platforms- they are just too heavy for dancing and can hinder your awesome performance! Now your wedding dress- well what can we say. It’s your day and you select anything that makes you even more beautiful and happy. However, do be aware that princess gowns can get in the way, so plan accordingly. No matter what you decide to wear, this is all about you, enjoying your day and being able to make your first dance a cherished memory for everyone.

OK, now we’re going to talk about floor plans. You’re probably thinking- hey, we’re taking dance lessons, not interior decorating! Well, you will need to be aware of your floor space, to make sure you have the room you need to really strut your stuff for that all important first dance, so please bring the floor plan with you.

To ensure that there will be enough room, make sure to have the dimensions of the dance floor when you come in for your consultation. Your instructor will need this to provide you with the best estimation of what is realistic for your dancing space. For example, if you select a slower, elegant dance then you’ll be fine with anything above a ten by ten area.  If you’re really going to be rocking out, then you’ll need at least a twenty by twenty dance floor. No matter which type of dancing you choose, we want to be sure that there is plenty of room to kick up your heels and really show off your incredible dancing skills!
